History
In 1981, Paul Hicks II was working full-time at Franklin Memorial Hospital as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and part-time as a delivery and set-up technician with the Roanoke office of a national Durable Medical Equipment Company (DME). Because there was no local DME, Paul found himself driving medical equipment back and forth from homes all over Franklin County to Roanoke. Often Franklin County patients, especially those in the most rural locations, had to wait 24 hours or longer for their medical equipment. Paul felt he could better serve his respiratory patients if he could cut out the unnecessary travel to and from Roanoke. He and his wife, Karen, a registered nurse, bought some respiratory equipment and started Franklin County Respiratory Rentals, operating out of their home in the Grassy Hill section of Franklin County. Today, the business is in its third location and offers a huge variety of home medical equipment and supplies.
In March of 2008, the company name was changed to Franklin Respiratory & Medical, Inc.; a name that reflects the changes the company has made over the years.
Many of their current customers are the children and grandchildren of people they served when they first opened. The Hicks and general manager, Lisa Whitlock, along with several other long-time employees, have established Franklin Respiratory & Medical, Inc. as a company where personal service, caring attention to detail, and high ethical business practices are the standard.
